Terra-Cotta Warriors

Amazing to see the scope of the terra cotta warriors excavation site. Currently 1,200 have been unearthed and a total of 8,000 are believed to exist. It took the emperor's workers 37 years to create the warriors, horses and chariots. Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, believed that he would need an army in the afterlife to protect him, so these thousands of figures were buried with him in 210-209 B.C.

The site is about 45 minutes outside Xi,an with the Li mountains behind it. It's a really lovely site, apparently chosen by the emperor for his burial area because of the good fung shui. This is the first time we've seen terrain other than flat. It's a treat. - Peggy

After seeing the Terra-Cotta Army in person, it was so exciting to see in the June 2012 National Geographic, an article by Brook Larmer depicting what the warriors would look like in their original colors.
