No Greater Disappointment, No Lesser Living Thing

Concubines connive
vie for attention
fight for affection
only to be buried alive by love
Mothers break the delicate bones
of their daughter's feet
transforming them into beautiful cripples
Women live entire lives
cloistered in darker rooms
with smaller tiles
never leaving lingering gardens
Girl babies dismissed from the womb
nipped in the bud
forbidden to bloom
abandoned, unwanted, unloved
no greater disappointment
no lesser living thing
