Monday in China

After struggling with the Internet until 3:30 in the morning and figuring out how to post on Blogger, where it may still be blocked, I awoke to a magnificent breakfast buffet in the very nice Marriott in Shanghai. Omelet and waffle bar, breads, pastries, cheeses, Chinese noodles, and fried rice were just some of the many choices.

After breakfast it was time for currency exchange...love foreign money...like Monopoly money to me. Off to to the highlights of Shanghai.

Our guide today was quite personable. We started with a walk on the Bund over-looking the Huangpu River on the Shanghai side. After going though the tunnel we arrived to the "new" Shanghai side and toured the Silk Museum and the Oriental Pearl Tower...beautiful!

On the way our guide pointed out the high-rise residency in Shanghai which he shared costs: $25,000 per square meter and each residence is around 300 meters...I calculated that to be about 7.5 million per residency. I don't think I will be living well in Shanghai anytime soon.

If I had money to burn, I would have purchased a silk comforter, pillow, and red dress at the silk museum; I took pictures instead. The demonstration on how the beautiful silk items were created was fascinating. At the South China Sea Pearl, I fell in love with a pearl ring which cost about 3600 yuan.

The Oriental Pearl Tower was next and included an unexpected surprise. I anticipated the view form the 3rd tallest building in the world to be spectacular (even on this very overcast and cloudy day) but was not prepared to step out onto a glass floor allowing us to see below with a birds-eye view. It felt like floating or riding on a magic carpet. Those of us afraid of heights were quickly identified. Watching the fearless children walk across it, sit, and stare below was quite entertaining.

If there could be a highlight of the day, the relaxing river-boat cruise might have been it. Seeing Shanghai from the water was a treat!

The Chinese meal at the Bund Hotel/ Restaurant which included family-style service on a "lazy Susan" included more delicious food than we could consume.

Words can't describe the day or do the experiences justice but maybe the following pictures will help...
