As Peggy expressed in her "Welcome Home and Highlights" post, the people of China LOVE their children; their beautiful faces and expressions quite often stopped us in our tracks. As humble as the people were, they were thrilled by the attention to and photographs taken of their babies, and the care-givers were most often grandparents.

You are right! The children in your pictures look so animated! Why were most of the their caregivers their grandparents?
Anthony, family ties are very strong in the Chinese culture and historically grandparents have had a hand in raising their grandchildren. Today, economic factors are increasing this tendency. In rural areas, parents will often move to big cities to seek better wages, leaving their child behind with grandparents. In cities, after a woman has given birth, she typically goes back to work, creating a need for someone to care for the child. Grandparents step in to fill this need. It is not uncommon for children to live with their grandparents in urban areas during the workweek and only return to the parents on weekends. - Peggy
Awe! You were able to capture so many amazing pictures of the children and their guardians. It is so wonderful to see all of them! What joy they have and a bit more relaxed!
